This page exists because sighted people often don’t know what they don’t know. Let’s fix that in 3 minutes.
Visual Impairment is a spectrum
It’s not just “blind” vs “seeing.” Some people have tunnel vision, some see blurry, some have light sensitivity, some have no sight at all. The one thing in common? We’re all tired of explaining it.
Three things sighted people get wrong
- “You don’t look blind.” – There’s no “look.” Many VI people have normal-looking eyes.
- “Can you see this?” (while waving a hand) – Please don’t. Just ask: “What can you see?” if you need to know.
- Assuming we need help. – Ask first. “Would you like some guidance?” Then listen.
A quick etiquette guide
- Speak normally (we’re not deaf or children).
- Announce yourself when entering a room.
- Offer your elbow for guidance, don’t grab ours.
- If we have a cane, it’s our space bubble. Please don’t step over it.
