Why do some people use a white cane only sometimes?
Different situations call for different tools. Occasional cane use isn't a sight test, respect the tool and the person.
Because different situations can call for different tools. Using a cane occasionally doesn’t mean somebody’s sight loss is occasional, or that you can judge their vision from that choice.
The surroundings can change even when sight doesn’t
A familiar room and an unfamiliar station present different demands. Lighting, obstacles and the route can affect what information someone needs to travel comfortably.
For some people vision itself varies; for others it is stable. You don’t need to know which applies before respecting their use of a cane.
White canes do different jobs
Guide Dogs describes several cane types:
- Long canes help a trained user detect obstacles and changes in the walking surface.
- Guide canes have a shorter reach and can help detect obstacles nearby.
- Symbol canes primarily signal sight loss to other people. They aren’t designed as navigation or physical support aids.
- Support canes can provide physical support for a person who also has sight loss.
The appearance of a cane isn’t enough to tell you how its user sees. Choosing and learning to use a mobility cane calls for appropriate assessment and training.
A cane isn’t a claim you need to check
Putting a cane away, using a phone or walking without assistance doesn’t invalidate sight loss.
The useful response is to respect the tool when it appears, and respect the person when it doesn’t.
If you think someone needs help, ask. Don’t grab their cane or steer their body. Let them say whether assistance is wanted and what kind.
YOU SEE ME. YOU ASSUME THE REST. A cane is one thing you noticed. It isn’t the whole story.
Frequently asked questions
Can partially sighted people use a white cane?
Yes. Cane use isn’t limited to people with no vision. Different types meet different needs, including identifying sight loss to others.
Does occasional cane use mean someone’s vision has improved?
Not necessarily. They may use different tools in different places. You can’t establish a change in vision by watching whether a cane is out.
What is a symbol cane used for?
Its main purpose is to let others know the user has sight loss. It isn’t a substitute for a trained mobility cane or a physical support aid.
Should I move someone’s cane out of the way?
Ask the person first. Don’t grab, reposition or put away their cane without permission. Tell them about a specific obstruction if you are concerned.
