Can you pet a guide dog? Give a working dog space.

A working guide dog needs to concentrate. Petting, calling or feeding can distract it, respect the person and the dog.

A guide dog may be irresistible. That doesn’t mean an invitation has been issued.

When a guide dog is working, leave it to concentrate. Stroking, calling to or feeding it can interrupt its work and put its owner at risk.

A quick fuss can have consequences

Guide Dogs warns that distraction can affect a dog’s focus while it helps its owner navigate. Your brief interaction is part of somebody else’s journey.

You don’t need to decide whether the dog looks busy enough. A dog lying quietly beside its owner isn’t automatically available for attention.

What should you do instead?

  • Speak to the person if there is a reason to engage.
  • Give the dog space. Avoid calling, touching or offering food.
  • Keep your own dog from approaching or distracting it.
  • Ask before offering assistance to the owner, then follow their instructions.

If the owner explicitly invites you to greet the dog, follow their guidance. Otherwise, admire without interrupting. They don’t owe anybody a dog encounter or an explanation for declining one.

No harness doesn’t mean open season

An off-duty dog still has an owner who decides whether interaction is appropriate. Ask before touching, and accept the answer.

The important question is permission, not whether you can spot a technical exception.

Say hello to the person

The dog is not the whole conversation. If you’re greeting someone, address them directly and let them decide whether to chat.

STARING DOESN’T HELP. A HELLO DOES. A respectful hello also leaves space for someone to carry on with their day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stroke a guide dog in harness?

Leave a working guide dog alone. Don’t touch or distract it. Follow the owner’s instructions if they explicitly invite an interaction.

Is talking to a guide dog a distraction?

It can be. Calling its name, making attention-seeking sounds or talking to it can draw focus away from its owner and work.

Can I give a guide dog a treat?

Don’t offer food or treats. Feeding is another form of distraction; the dog’s owner manages its needs and routine.

What if the guide dog looks relaxed?

Looking relaxed isn’t permission to touch. Respect the owner’s space and instructions, including when the dog is sitting or lying down.

Keep looking closer
